File: Joint Recruiting Board

Scope and Content

Papers relating to the work of the Manchester University Joint Recruiting Board. The Board dealt with the application of national service as it affected the University's students. The Board was chaired by a University figure, and included representatives of each of the Service departments. Its tasks were to encourage recruitment during wartime, and to assess the most appropriate use of those called up, including whether exemptions should be granted for those with specialist skills. When national service was continued in peacetime, the Board dealt mainly with deferrals and exemptions from military service.
