File: English for Overseas Students

Scope and Content

The file covers various aspects of providing English etching for overseas students. During the 1960s, the growing numbers of overseas students taking University courses, had led to a review of English language teaching, and in 1970, the University established the post of tutor in English (within the Faculty of Education) to co-ordinate efforts. The file includes papers relating to the creation of this post, a copy of the tutor's first report (1971); views on a common test in English for overseas students at UK unvisited (an idea promoted by the University of Cambridge); fees for English tests; and details of courses in English studies for overseas students.
