The lectures were established in 1948 in memory of Eleanor Rathbone (1872-1946), the feminist activist and social reformer. Rathbone had been MP for the Combined English Universities constituency, of which Manchester was part, and the lectures were held periodically at the universities which made up the constituency. The subject matter of the lectures were a social, political , economic or educational topics. Lectures were held at Manchester in 1954, 1963, and 1976. Most of this file concerns Professor Ralf Clarendon’s lecture on "Inequality, hope and progress" in 1976.
