File: Appointments Board

Scope and Content

Correspondence and papers relating to the work of the Manchester University Appointments Board. The Board was set up in 1934 against the background of graduate unemployment during the Depression, and was originally chaired by Frederick Marquis [later Lord Woolton, the chancellor of the University]. It included employers' representatives along with members of Council and Senate. Most of the material concerns routine administration but the employment situation of graduates in the 1930s is discussed as are the views of employers concerning the suitability of graduate qualifications for employment.
