File: Joint Advisory Committee on Tutorial Classes

Scope and Content

Minutes and papers of the Joint Committee for Tutorial Classes, which was chaired by the vice-chancellor. The Committee had been established in 1909 to oversee the teaching of more advanced adult education courses in the Manchester area. The Committee was largely composed of University staff and officials of the Workers' Educational Association; the latter body undertook the running of the tutorial classes and paid the University a fee for the services of tutors. The Committee was replaced by the Committee for Adult Education in 1948.

The file also contains papers concerning a meeting of the Central Joint Advisory Committee on Tutorial Classes (a national body co-ordinating the work of the local joint committees) with the Board of Education in December 1933 concerning the Board's grant for tutorial classes.
