File: Examinations

Scope and Content

In the late 1960s, University examination procedures attracted criticism from parts of the student body. Proposals were mooted by students for different types of assessment and for participation in devising examination procedures. As a result of this, in 1968 the Vice-Chancellor issued a request for heads of departments to provide information on current procedures, and the file includes a number of responses (maths, Spanish, English, engineering geology, audiology, biochemistry, American studies, German, electrical engineering).

A discrete section of the file contains papers of the Working Party on Academic Assessment of Students, a staff-student committee established in 1971, which reported in 1974, after investigating current arrangements for examining students. This includes a note of dissent by student members from the final report.
