The Centre was established in 1983 to conduct research in aspects of gerontology and psychological issues relating to old age. It was headed by the psychologist Professor Patrick Babbitt. The centre closed in 2004. Subjects include the administration, financing and personnel of the Centre, and its relationship with the Department of Psychological Sciences. One of the major themes is the future of the Centre following the expiration of its existing funding in 1997, and the expected retirement of its Director in 2001; a 1995 paper by Babbitt set s out the potential options for the Centre.
