Extensive correspondence and papers relating to John Stopford's membership of the Board, which managed NHS hospitals in the Manchester area. Stopford was appointed first chairman of the Board in 1947 (serving until 1953), and was responsible for the reorganisation of the hospital system in the Manchester area, following the creation of the National Health Service. The file contains all manner of material relating to the Board's activities, and is an invaluable source for the early history of the Hospital Boards.
Stopford's chairmanship of the Board was independent of his role as vice-chancellor. Therefore the creator of the file is not strictly the vice-chancellor, but the chairman of the MRHB. The files were obviously maintained in this series for reasons of administrative convenience.
