Papers concerning applications for assistance by foreign academics displaced from posts in European countries for political and racial reasons. Much of file consists of correspondence with and about individual scholars, particularly those from Germany and refugees from countries occupied by Germany between 1938-1942. This correspondence is generally, but not exclusively, arranged alphabetically by correspondent. It contains much valuable incidental material about the work and the circumstances of these individuals. There is also correspondence between the University and the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning [formerly the Academic Assistance Council] which co-ordinated efforts to help refugee scholars, and the International Student Service which worked to assist refugee students.
