Scope and Content

The Department of Agricultural Economics was part of the Faculty of Economic and Social Studies. The Department received the bulk of its funding from the Ministry of Agriculture, and was required to undertake certain consultancy and research roles on behalf of the Ministry. In addition to this, departmental staff undertook normal academic duties, working with colleagues in the Department of Economics.

The file includes routine administrative papers, including: papers relating to the elevation of departmental staff to full University lecturer status in 1956; outside consultancy work; the administration of the Ministry's grants; and several informative memoranda on the Department's work including Professor Watkin Thomas's report on the integration of agricultural economics into the mainstream academic work of the University (March 1959), and a memoranda also by Professor Thomas supplied to the Agricultural Sub-Committee of the UGC in 1968. )
