File: Dermatology

Scope and Content

The file comprises papers dating from two periods: 1942-5 and 1970, which discuss the academic status of dermatology (there was no independent department for this subject). The earlier papers are concerned with the place of dermatology in University medical teaching in the post-war period, and includes correspondence between the vice-chancellor and P.B. Mumford (1896-1972), the leading dermatologist in the Manchester area, who had proposed that a dermatological unit be included as part of the University's planned redevelopment of its medical school at the so-called "Island Site", Mumford wrote several reports on this matter including "Dermatology and venereology in Manchester", (December 1942) and a note on post-war dermatological services, dated 19 January 1945. The later papers concern proposals by Dr J.G. Coburn and Maurice Garretts for a chair in dermatology, and include comments by the then dean of the Medical School, Jonas Kellgren, on this proposal.
