The Roscoe Lecture was instituted in 1977 with a legacy of Colin Roscoe (1891-1971), a Stockport businessman, and benefactor of the University's extra-mural department as well as many local charities. The Roscoe lectures were on scientific subjects for a non-specialist audiences. The first lectures were by Walter Patterson (Friends of the Earth) in 1978 and Sir John Mason (Met Office) in 1980.
