The undergraduate degree of engineering manufacture and management had been established by University and UMIST in the 1970s. The purpose of the degree was provide engineering students with a background in management studies and economics. The course was run by the VUM and UMIST departments of engineering, and UMIST department of management sciences. The first students were admitted to the course in 1978 (students spent a year on industrial placement). The file includes discussions relating to the establishment and rationale of the course, and includes a report on the first year of the course
