Papers relating to the College of Technology's (later UMIST) change of status in 1956, when Manchester City Council relinquished its interest in the College. The change came in response to the government's desire to create national colleges of technology, undertaking advanced research and training. The College was renamed the Manchester College of Science and Technology, and granted its charter in 1956.
