The Department's remit was with the theory and practice of adult education, rather than the direct provision of continuing education courses, which remained the responsibility of the Extra-Mural Department.
Subjects covered in this file include: demarcation issues between the extra-mural and adult education departments; research work on community education; plans for a regional institute of adult education (1966); the Department's evidence to the Russell Committee on Adult Education (1970), and its response to the Russell report; plans for second chair in adult education; a planned centre for broadcasting and journalism studies (1973); a proposed Institute of Adult Studies incorporating EMD and Adult Education (1972); accommodation issues; a proposed training course in adult education for graduates, and a discrete folder on the Joint Liaison Committee for Adult Education which included representatives from Manchester Education Committee and the University.
