Copp was senior house officer at Withington Hospital Manchester and registrar in physical medicine at Devonshire Royal Hospital, Buxton. In 1961 he was appointed clinical assistant in the department of physical medicine at MRI, and held the same position at Llandudno General Hospital before being appointed consultant (rheumatology and rehabilitation) at Manchester Central Hospitals Trust.
