Campbell qualified in 1957 and began his career in anaesthetics in the RAMC. He held anaesthetics appointments in Manchester hospitals before being appointed consultant anaesthetist to Oldham Health Authority in 1969. In this post he anaesthetised for the world's first test tube baby in 1977. Campbell was also chair of dental anaesthesia at Salford University.
