Gaisford was born on 6 April 1902 and held junior positions at St Bartholomew's Hospital London before being appointed honorary assistant physician and anaesthetist for East London Children's Hospital. He was consultant paediatrician for Warwick County Council, before moving to Manchester where he was honorary paediatrician at St Mary's Hospital Manchester and honorary physician at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Gaisford was also professor of child health and paediatrics and director of the department of child health at the University of Manchester. In this role he developed paediatrics in Manchester and his department gained an international reputation. Gaisford was a president of the British Paediatric Association and was an honorary fellow of the American Academy of Paediatrics. In 1948 he opened the first meeting of the Paediatric Section of Manchester Medical Society and was elected as the first honorary secretary. Gaisford retired from his chair in 1967 and became emeritus professor, he moved to Cornwall for his retirement. He died in April 1988.
