Francis was a physician practising in the Strangeways area of Manchester in the 1840s and 1850s. He lecturers in materia medica and therapeutics at the Chetham Street Medical School in Manchester in 1850. He was later physician to the Dispensary for Consumption and Diseases of the Chest, Margaret Street, London. He then moved to Northampton where he was first visiting physician to Northamptonshire Lunatic Asylum, and later senior physician at Northampton Infirmary and consulting physician at Market Marlborough Dispensary.
