Golland was apprenticed to Dr J.W. Wilson in 1829 and entered the Manchester Royal Manchester School of Medicine, where he won two medals. He also attended the anatomy theatre at the Marsden Street Medical School. Golland worked at MRI from 1831 until 1834 first as a dresser and later as resident in the fever wards. He then went to London and worked at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospitals but returned to MRI in 1836 to the post of house surgeon. Golland was assistant to John Windsor before settling in general practice. Golland was surgeon to the Manchester Fever Hospital and to Manchester and Salford Lying in Hospital, a post he resigned in 1847. He was surgeon to the borough gaol in Belle Vue from 1849 until his death in 1864.
