Douglas was educated at Cambridge University and Manchester, and qualified in 1947; he worked at MRI, Altrincham General and Salford Royal Hospital, before entering general practice in Windsor, Berkshire. In 1961 Douglas disappeared from the Maudsley Hospital, London, where he was being treated for a nervous disorder. He was the son of cancer surgeon William Robert Douglas (see below).
