'Jack' Goldman was born in Manchester on 23 July 1912 and studied medicine at the University of Manchester. He held junior positions at Stockport Infirmary, Blackpool Infirmary and Crumpsall Hospital Manchester, and was planning a career in haematology, but this was interrupted by the war, in which Goldman served in the RAMC. Goldman was assistant pathologist at Manchester Victoria Memorial Jewish Hospital, resident clinical pathologist at MRI and resident medical officer at Stockport Infirmary. He later became a general practitioner in Manchester and founded one of the early group practices. Goldman was also clinical assistant in psychiatry at Hope Hospital Salford. He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and Manchester Medical Society .
