Campbell was a pathologist who worked first at Edinburgh where he was particularly interested in neuropathology and was lecturer in pathology. In 1950 Campbell moved to Manchester where he was appointed Proctor Professor of Pathology at the University, a position he held until 1973. From 1965 to 1970 Campbell was dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Manchester, and was later pro-vice chancellor of the University. Campbell was also director of studies of the College of Pathologists from 1973 until 1977. Campbell was a member of Manchester Medical Society and was its president in 1970. He was also a member of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and the Association of Clinical Pathologists. Campbell died on 19 November 1996.
