Ghosh, known as Joe, was born in Calcutta on 16 October 1886 and gained his medical education in Bombay. In 1916 was appointed house surgeon and later resident surgical officer at Salford Royal Hospital and was later promoted to anaesthetist, a position he held until his death. Ghosh was also honorary anaesthetist to Eccles and Patricroft Hospital and anaesthetist and radiologist to Hope Hospital, Salford. Ghosh died on 24 September 1948, aged sixty one. His substantial library including rare editions and thousands of volumes of dictionaries, was donated to Salford Library.
