Gowland studied medicine at Queen's University Ireland and Owens College Manchester. After qualifying, Gowland was resident medical officer for Manchester Workhouse in Crumpsall (later Crumpsall Hospital). He then went to Warsop, Nottinghamshire, where he was medical officer of health. Gowland returned to Manchester where he was appointed honorary surgeon to Chorlton-on-Medlock Dispensary. He was later public vaccinator for Rusholme and Moss Side and medical attendant at St Mary's Home. By 1909 Gowland had retired to Suffolk.
