Dobbing studied at St Mary's Hospital London, graduating MB BS in 1953. He held various posts in the London area, and was a senior lecturer in growth and development at the Institute of Child Care. In 1968 Dobbing was made senior lecturer in neo-natal nutrition at the University of Manchester, and was granted honorary consultant status by the Board of United Manchester Hospitals. He was promoted to professor of child growth and development in 1974. Dobbing was also an active member of the academic board of the British Paediatric Association, and published widely on paediatric research.
