Balint was born in Budapest in 1896. After qualifying in Budapest, he was appointed training analyst to the Budapest Institute of Psychoanalysis in 1926. Balint emigrated to England in 1939. In 1942 was appointed Medical Director and Psychiatrist for North East Lancashire and Preston Child Guidance Clinics, and was also appointed honorary consultant psychiatrist Manchester North Hospital in 1943. Balint later moved to London where he was appointed consultant psychiatrist at the Tavistock Clinic. He was also visiting professor of psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati. Balint was president of the British Psychoanalytical Society and fellow of British Psychiatric Society. He was particularly known for his collaboration with general practitioners. Balint died on 31 December 1971.
