Born on 18 August 1933, Foster trained at University College Hospital, London and held junior posts at Luton and Dunstable Hospital. From 1958 until 1960 Foster undertook military service, working as a trainee anaesthetist. He then returned to University College Hospital as an anaesthetist before spending two years in Boston, USA. Foster returned again to University College Hospital in 1963 when he was appointed senior registrar in anaesthetics, before being appointed consultant anaesthetist at MRI. Foster was a member of Manchester Medical Society and of the Association of Anaesthetists.
