After qualifying, 'Bill' Beswick held a number of appointments at Ancoats Hospital before being appointed demonstrator in physiology at the University of Manchester in 1951. In 1954 he was appointed lecturer in experimental physiology, being promoted to senior lecturer in 1965. From 1966 he was Associate Dean of the Medical School, becoming executive dean in 1969, and played a major role in the development of the new Medical School, which opened in 1973. In 1980 Beswick was appointed Bursar to the University of Manchester. From 1966 to 1984 Beswick was also honorary lecturer in physiology. In 1984 Beswick became chairman of the Salford Health Authority. Beswick is a life fellow of Manchester Medical Society . He is the father of Jennifer Beswick
