After qualifying as a psychologist in University College London, Cohen worked with research groups in London and Oxford. From 1941 to 1948 he was attached to the Offices of the War Cabinet and Central Statistical Officer. Cohen was also involved with the Expert Committee on the Work of Psychologists and Psychiatrists in the Services and with the World Federation for Mental Health. In 1948 Cohen was lecturer in Psychology at the University of Leeds, and the next year went to Jerusalem as Professor of Psychology. In 1952 Cohen was appointed Professor of Psychology at the University of Manchester. Here he engaged in a world renowned study of behaviour in uncertainty and published extensively. Cohen retired in 1979.
