Gerrard, known as Gerry, was born in Swinton on 10 April 1903. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester. After qualifying he spent a year as a ship's doctor before holding house appointments in Manchester at MRI, Ancoats Hospital and St Mary's Hospital. He also undertook postgraduate study in Vienna, Budapest and Edinburgh. In 1931 Gerrard was appointed assistant surgical officer to MRI and registrar to St Mary's Hospital Manchester. He was also urological registrar to Ancoats Hospital and assistant lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Manchester. In 1933 Gerrard found appointments as honorary assistant surgeon to the Manchester Northern Hospital and was assistant obstetrical and gynaecological surgeon to Withington Hospital Manchester. The next year he was appointed honorary assistant obstetrical surgeon to St Mary's Hospital. From 1939 until 1945 Gerrard served on the council of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, making the suggestion for postgraduate training of doctors returning from the war. In 1945 Gerrard returned to Manchester after spending time in Aberdeen, and in 1946 became surgeon for women to St Mary's Hospitals and clinical lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Manchester. Gerrard was also actively involved in the BMA, he was chairman of the Manchester Division, a member of Council and in 1964 was elected president of the BMA. He was president of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society and Manchester Medico-Ethical Association. Gerrard was a member of Manchester Medical Society . He died on 29 January 1977.
