Scope and Content

From Ernest Barker, 1874-1960, historian and political scientist.

19/1 queries Tait's views on taxes as expressed in an article in English Historical Review Oct 1914; discusses nature of writs described in Patent Rolls and Rymer's Foedera, and variations in writs of 1295 and 1296 suggesting radical changes in tax collecting (enclosed is a holograph note in Tait's hand on the English translation of D Pasquet, Essai sur les origines de la Chambre de Commones (Cambridge 1925), which is dated 1926).

19/2 1 Apr 1915, cannot take up Tait's suggestion should subscribe to the society publishing Cheshire records [presumably Chetham Society], but will buy a copy for the New College library; refers again to alleged tax exemption of cities and boroughs on demesne; thinks not meant to be exempt but ambiguous wording due to bad drafting.
