From Arthur Lionel Smith, (1850-1924), historian and master of Balliol College, Oxford. Smith was Tait's history tutor at Balliol.
203/1 28 Dec 1883, advises Tait on lodgings, noting "it is not socially advantageous to be an out-resident", suggest rooms may be available at Balliol.
203/2 5 May 1916, refers to Tait as "a most distinguished" former pupil of Balliol.
203/3 23 Dec 1917, has greatly enjoyed reading Tait's edition of Quarter Sessions records [Lancashire Quarter Sessions Records vol.1 Chetham Society 1917].
203/4 30 Aug 1922 praises Tait's 'Municipal history' [presumably his British Academy lecture, "The study of early municipal history in England', 1922] for "its perfect lucidity and a delicate humour", and has learnt much from it. Would like more copies to distribute, including a signed copy for the Balliol Library.
