Letter from Henry Travis to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter, opening Travis acknowledging receipt of Owen's letter, following which they have resolved to call a meeting of Directors [of the branches of Universal Community Society of Rational Religionists]. Travis explains his pleasure in hearing of Owen's "stirring and prosperous proceedings" [delivering lectures in Scotland], and notes that "Socialism is the subject of remark or comment in every paper".

The ongoing purchase of the Tytherley Estate from [Isaac] Goldsmid is discussed, with Travis writing of receiving a letter from [William] Ashurst acknowledging receipt of £1100 and advising Owen or [William] Pare to meet with Goldsmid at the property and iron out the details of the deal. Progress with the deal will reach those concerned through the paragraph placed by Travis in the New Moral World.

The remainder of the letter concerns the unauthorised publication of a second edition of the Book of The New Moral World by the Edinburgh publishers Robinsons; Owen is advised to deal with this "subject of importance" whilst he in Edinburgh.
