SCC writes to his father regarding the Leadership of the Liberal Party. He reports that William Ewart Gladstone resigned at the last Cabinet meeting. He writes that Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl Granville and Lyon Playfair wish that the whole party is consulted before a leader is selected. He informs his father that Granville believes SCC will be offered the Leadership but SCC hopes that is not the case. He writes that the Opposition is very divided currently and would be easier if there were different leaders for the different factions. He requests an opinion from his father regarding how to reply to John Pope Hennessy. Sent from: Kimbolton Castle, St. Neots, date stamped, 18 Jan.
