Granville writes to SCC regarding the proposed expedition to Khartoum to relieve General Charles Gordon. He writes that he does not object to the reconnaissance mission to Donjola. He writes that the telegram from "Egerton" was replied to by Thomas Baring, 1st Earl Northbrook but orders should be sent to General Frederick Stephenson. He writes that William Ewart Gladstone is very concerned with domestic political matters and his hold on the country is different to Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury and Lord Randolph Churchill. He concludes the letter by writing "Are we strong enough to fight Denmark and all Europe on Egyptian sanitary matters?" Sent from: Walmer Castle, Deal, date stamped, 19 Aug.
