Marshall was educated at Rochdale Central School and Manchester Grammar School before entering Manchester Medical School, from which he graduated with distinctions. Marshall was resident medical officer at Manchester Children's Hospital, house surgeon at MRI, assistant medical officer at the Manchester Consumption Hospital, resident surgeon to Ancoats Hospital Manchester and house surgeon at Bradford Royal Infirmary. In 1914, Marshall joined the RAMC. He died when his ship, Royal Edward, sank in the Aegean Sea on 13 August 1915. He was 27 years old.
