Macklin twice went to the Antarctic as surgeon to Sir Ernest Shackelton's expeditions. He was born in Melrose on 1 August 1889 and received his medical education at the University of Manchester. He held hospital appointments in Manchester and Sheffield before sailing to the Antarctic for the first time in 1914, the expedition was abandoned due to pack ice. After serving in the RAMC Macklin gained his MD. He then set off on another expedition with Shackleton, which was again abandoned. Between the wars, Macklin practised in Dundee and was consultant to Dundee Royal Infirmary. During the second war, he served with the army and was appointed assistant director of medical services in East Africa. He returned to Scotland and was medical officer at Aberdeen University. Macklin was closely involved in the development of student health services and was president of the British Student Health Association. Macklin died on 21 March 1967.
