Mould studied at Birmingham Medical School, qualifying in 1858. His entire career was spent dealing with mental patients. In 1858 he was appointed house surgeon at the Lancashire County Asylum, Prestwich. In 1863 he moved to Cheadle Royal Asylum as medical superintendent, where he remained until 1903. He lectured in mental diseases for Owens College Manchester, with the lectures being delivered at Cheadle Royal. He was president of the Medical Psychological Association in 1880.
