Knight studied medicine at Manchester before settling in general practice in Urmston. She was house surgeon at the maternity and children's departments at St Mary's Hospital Manchester and senior house surgeon at Biddulph Grange Orthopaedic Hospital. She was later assistant divisional medical officer for Lancashire County Council. Knight was a member of MMS, a fellow of the Society of Medical Officers of Health, and a member of the Medical Women's Federation.
