Mallick was born in Blackburn on 3 August 1935 and was educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Blackburn, and the University of Manchester, where he won a number of prizes. He spent a year at Harvard as research fellow in surgery, and then held resident appointments at MRI and Withington Hospital Manchester. Mallick was later appointed consultant physician and physician in charge of the department of renal medicine at MRI and in 1994 was appointed professor in renal medicine at the University of Manchester. Mallick was a member of MMS. He was awarded a knighthood in 1998 for his pioneering work on kidney treatment and transplant procedures.
