Administrative / Biographical History

BSc (Chemistry) Manch 1927, MSc 1928, MB ChB 1942.

Lempert was born in 1906 and attended Manchester Grammar School. From a young age, Lempert had wanted to become a doctor, however, this was an expensive choice and he instead began his career in chemistry. After graduating in chemistry in 1927, Lempert became an industrial chemist. However, in 1931 he decided to pursue his aim of becoming a doctor. He was appointed technical assistant to MRI clinical laboratories and held this position until 1935. In 1935, Lempert was appointed biochemist and chief laboratory technician to the Manchester Victoria Jewish Hospital. From 1936 to 1942 Lempert was a part time student at the University of Manchester, studying for a medical degree. He was also part time laboratory technician to the Leigh Infirmary and the Holt Radium Institute (Christie Hospital Manchester). After qualifying, Lempert was appointed house physician at MRI. He was a medical officer in the RAF in Cawnpore before returning to MRI where he was appointed assistant director of the department of clinical pathology. He did valuable work in the field of haematology; he became an expert on anti-coagulation and was in charge of a busy anti-coagulation therapy clinic at MRI. Lempert was promoted to consultant in 1952 and was also honorary lecturer in clinical pathology at the University of Manchester. Lempert died suddenly on 20 May 1962. His wife, Susanne Lempert, was also a doctor (see below).
