Johns studied medicine at Guy's Hospital and St Thomas's Hospital, London and qualified MRCs in 1810; he was awarded the MD by Hope University in 1820 and MD by Aberdeen University in 1823. He was a former superintendent registrar for births and deaths for Manchester, and was a consultant surgeon at Chorlton on Medlock Dispensary.
