Ian Isherwood qualified in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1954. He was consultant radiologist at the Derby Hospital Group 1961-3, consultant radiologist at UMH in 1963, assistant director of radiological services at UMH in 1965 and deputy director in 1969. From 1967 he was a lecturer in diagnostic radiology, and was appointed professor of diagnostic radiology at the University of Manchester in 1975. Professor Isherwood was a specialist in neuroradiology and played a leading role in the development of brain scans, total body scans and computer tomography. He was president of the section of radiology of the Royal Society of Medicine, and was a former president of the British Institute of Radiology.
