Matthews, who was in medical practice prior to 1815, died in Manchester on 29 May 1861, aged 68. Matthews was a surgeon practicing in Gartside Street, Manchester, from at least the 1820s until his death. Samuel entered Manchester Grammar School in 1805, and was listed as the son of Samuel Matthews, a doctor of Manchester. Matthews had many children, in particular Arthur Sidney Matthews, who died at the age of four years and nine months, but had attracted national attention for the rate of his growth and his mental powers, and William Clarence Matthews who became a surgeon in Manchester (see below).
