Hooton was educated at Owens College, MRI and the London Dental Hospital and qualified as a dentist in 1888-9. originally in private practice in Manchester, he was honorary dental surgeon at MRI from 1897-1914. During the First World War he worked at the jaw injury centre in Ducie Avenue, which was part of the 2nd Western General Hospital. He spent the rest of his professional life in private practice in Manchester.
