MacLeod studied medicine at Edinburgh University. He held resident appointments at Ashton-under-Lyne District Infirmary, Salford Royal Hospital and South Manchester Workhouse Hospital (later Withington Hospital). MacLeod later returned to Scotland and settled in general practice in Glasgow.
