Macalpine, known by many as 'J.B.' was born on 11 February 1882 and received his medical education at the University of Manchester and the London Hospital. Macalpine held house appointments at MRI, before being appointed to Salford Royal Hospital, where he established and was in charge of the genito-urinary department. Macalpine wrote an important work in 1927 titled Cystoscopy and urography. He made improvements to the procedures for prostatectomy and, with Wignall, described the first series of tumours of the bladder attributable to dye-manufacture in England. Macalpine was also honorary lecturer in urology at the University of Manchester and consultant urological surgeon to Christie Hospital Manchester. Macalpine was president of the Section of Urology of the Royal Society of Medicine in 1934 and was Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1947. He was a founder member in 1945 of the British Association of Urological Surgeons and was the first recipient of its St Peter's Medal for distinguished services to the specialty. Macalpine died on 17 March 1960.
