Ollerenshaw was the son of Robert Ollerenshaw. He studied medicine at Oxford and Manchester Universities and was surgical registrar at MRI before being mobilised in 1939. Ollerenshaw was director of the Department of Medical Illustration at the University of Manchester, retiring in 1978. Ollerenshaw was a surgeon-in-chief of the St John Ambulance and a honorary surgeon to HM Queen Elizabeth II. He was husband of the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw. He died on 16 October 1986.
