Scope and Content

Wolseley writes to SCC regarding the proposed expedition to Khartoum to relieve General Charles Gordon. He writes that he is proposing an offer to the Mudir of Dongal that should be made Governor of Dongola, Berber and Khartoum under the sovereignty of Egypt and receive a salary of £100,000 per year for the first five years from Egypt with half a year's salary given as an advance. He reports that this plan is approved in agreement with Evelyn Baring, Thomas Baring, 1st Earl Northbrook and [Kubar] Pasha. Sent from: Wadi Halfa, date stamped, 24 Oct.
